How Game Designers Solved These 11 Problems
So it's the 100 Games that Mark Really, Really, Really, Really, Really Loves?
oh boy 2 hours
A few glaring mistakes: Harvest moon would be the grand father of cosy games. You confused Idris Elba for Ryan gosling.
1:54:54 Shadow of War had a good mechanic you don't see elsewhere because they patented it and nobody can use it until 2035, like the direction arrow in racing games in the 90s was similarly patented.
Game design!
As for games to add to the next 100, I'd like to nominate Unpacking. It's a game that utilizes very basic tools (the spaces we live in, the things we choose to keep, and a single sentence per level) to tell a beautiful story about a young woman's life and growth. It does it in such a subtle way that, if you're anything like me, it took a couple levels before I even realized that "hey, this game is trying to tell me something."
What, no Zork? Also, get off my lawn
I'm surprised Starcraft and Kentucky Route Zero didn't find their way on here. All we got from Starcraft was a million cameo's and a jab about players not being able to grock made up resources as easily as real ones. =p (Which struck me as sort of funny, given how obnoxiously prolifically the "you must construct additional pylons" meme was when I was in middle school.)
Tony Hawks would like a word with you.
101 - Animal well
I love that tunic is the poster image
XCOM being the only game here about which Mark says "so it's great, but look at this particular mechanic to NOT copy" is hilarious and deserved
No terraria mentioned 😨
Awesome watch! Even though there was a hundred games, I can only imagine the anguish of narrowing it down to that count haha.
It's cool because this list can double as a "Oh I didn't know about that game I should try it!" list!
43:54 I hate time limits in games. The devs are literally taking the leisure and freedom away from the player to experience the game at their own pace. As gamers we have different methods and approaches in solving solutions in a given level. /rant
Such a great video to watch to gain some inspiration for your own games
i'm cracking up over plugging the sims 3 over sims 4
to be clear i 100% agree it's just so funny to me
1:17:50 I know the devs confirmed this for X-COM 2, did they do the same thing in the first one? Also only applies to lower difficulty modes.
Darkest Dungeon my beloved
Really, no dying light 1 or 2?
just bookmarking - 37:15
thanks!
Good job pretending that piracy and emulation don't exist. I almost stole a car!
This is an amazing resource! So many good ideas all in one place.
A video so nice I’m going to watch it twice.
I've only played about 50 of these games.
I am so excited to watch this
Game designers, you HAVE to play bad games. You can't just play good games, you MUST play trash and garbage.
To be fair, alone in the dark spawned one really terrible movie, resident evil spawned countless terrible movies.
The lack of jrpgs saddens me
You mention cookie clicker as basically the catalyst to idle games becoming a thing, but I would like to recommend to you a game that, while still being worked on, shows what can happen when developers really try to push the gameplay limits of the genre, and why the difference between "idle" and "incremental" is more important nowadays. That game is "Orb of Creation"
Could you please be back in another 10 days with another list of 100 games? This was a great video to watch.
44:27 Modern Warfare was made by Infinity Ward, not Treyarch
I would've personally added Everquest for how it encouraged people to team up and group together as well as it's death system and how you recover your gear. I think this influenced Miyazaki with Dark Souls, he even mentioned that if he could take charge of an existing IP one would be Everquest. I would also have added the Fear & Hunger games for it's limb system and how your characters can lose their limbs, changing up gameplay.
Great video!!! A small correction: in addition to Steam and Xbox, Dishonored is also available on PlayStation 4 and 5 with a “Definitive Edition”.
Bruh... Space invaders move one alien every frame... The entire game don't go quicker with less aliens(Which is extremely obvious if you ever played the game)... XD
21:25 - surely somebody's modded that stuff back in by now, yeah?
How the fuck you've done that much of work I hope but don't think People Will get how much power you put on that so thank's
This was an amazing video! I am a beginner in the game-making world, and I hope I'll do something interesting in the future! Discovering your channel was the best thing that could have happened to me, since there is a lot to learn from your analysis videos and your dev blogs of Mind Over Magnet. I'm really thankful for your work. There is not a lot to take from rhythm games that we can apply to other genres, so I understand the lack of this type of game in the video. However, two games I think are worth mentioning are BPM: Bullets Per Minute, a game that combines first-person shooter and rhythm, and Crypt of the Necrodancer, a really fun and unique rhythm roguelike.
sonic adventure 2 combines 2 storylines divided among 6 playable characters and 3 very different gameplay styles. Eve Online build an entire game out of maintaining a functional economy.
What remains of Édith Finch ???
Fantastic list! I'm surprised I've at least tried a lot of these games. My personal additions would be "Borderlands 2" since it solidified the looter shooter which birthed the live service game genre and one of the Jackbox games for adding a ton of flexibility to the party game genre.
Oh man. My body is ready for this video
Made it till the end
Please please please Play Rain World! It’s a crazy game with complex ecosystems of monsters combined with finding your legs controlling an adorable slug cat!
I have a hunch what number one is gonna be. I'm going to steal this video idea from you
Play lousy games. You'll become a better-designer, out of spite.
